Women of Reform Judaism (WRJ) has had an impact in North America and across the globe for more than a century. Our organization’s work supports many important issues and institutions through resolutions, education, and grants from the YES (Youth, Education and Special Projects) Fund. The Rabbi Marla J. Feldman Social Justice Fund also allowed us to continue to engage women around timely issues and train them as leaders in the pursuit of justice.
WRJ also has a direct impact on our own local communities. When we served as District Presidents, our work centered around this focus. One of the roles of Districts is to help grow membership and engagement in individual sisterhoods/women’s groups. One of the ways we accomplished that is through model programs and projects. Sharing ideas across a network of women’s groups is a great way to help each other succeed in engaging our new and existing members. That is why we are both very excited to be co-chairs of the WRJ Day of Action being held on April 12, 2026. If necessary, your event can also be held on another day if it works better for your group. This organization-wide program is the perfect vehicle to help drive Reform Jewish women around North America to be engaged in a coordinated day of community action.
Each participant, both communities or individuals, can choose a project that resonates in their geographic area, or can use the replicable “programs in a box” that are available on the WRJ website. WRJ has created resources around several important issues to make it easy for communities or individuals to have an impact:
- Reproductive rights and health
- Gender-based violence
- Voting rights
- Antisemitism
- Climate justice
These resources, developed by the Education to Action Committee (E2A), can be used as guidelines for planning your Day of Action, or just as a source of inspiration. There are also many sisterhood and district programs that have won WRJ Or Ami awards that could also be used to inspire your project. These can be found on the Day of Action page of WRJ’s website.
One example of community coming together to make change are the women of Cincinnati, Ohio. The three WRJ-affiliated women’s groups in Cincinnati — Women of Rockdale, Women of Wise, and The Valley Temple Sisterhood — will be working together on their Day of Action event. Inspired by a presentation at a Heartland District event over the summer, they will be to collecting period products, diapers, and incontinence products to be donated to the local kosher food bank operated by Cincinnati’s Jewish Family Service. This effort aligns with the reproductive rights and women’s health priority and continues relationships between the local sisterhoods and the food bank. They will kick off the campaign with a Zoom program featuring a speaker from the Jewish Family Service to educate about local needs and the services provided. They will then collect items through the month of March in each sisterhood’s temple building. Finally, on April 12, they will collate the collected items into appropriate categories and have a thank you event to celebrate the work they did together. Hopefully, this effort will engage sisterhood women, educate congregations about the role of women’s groups in social action, and help the community.
To get us all in the “can-do” spirit, WRJ will be providing two webinars in preparation for the Day of Action. The first session, on February 19, will focus on utilizing the “programs in a box” for your community’s event and the other, on March 10, will be an upstander training provided by Cincinnati’s Holocaust and Humanities Center. The first session is coming soon, so visit WRJ’s website for more information. Please also plan to join us on Saturday evening, April 11 for a special, virtual, North America-wide Havdalah service to kick off our Day of Action. There will be surprise musical guests, so don’t miss it! Details will also be forthcoming.
If you have a great idea for a program, but need a little financial help, WRJ offers microgrants that can be used to fund your Day of Action project. Applications have just opened for the next round of grants and are accepted on a rolling basis, so learn more on WRJ’s website today.
WRJ has created an interactive map so that individuals and groups can find an action event near them. Don’t see your event on the map? Register your event with WRJ! We want as many like-minded women as possible to join together in making a positive impact on their communities. The map will facilitate Reform Jewish women in finding a way to be involved, and will allow us to visualize our collective impact during and after Day of Action.
We look forward to taking action with you this April.
