FLC Basics

WRJ Fried Leadership Conference (FLC) 2018 will take place in Nashville, Tennessee at the Nashville Airport Marriott Hotel, which will host both programming and nightly accommodations. FLC begins on Thursday, March 1 at 5:00 pm and runs through Sunday, March 4 at 11:30 am. Please note that some special programs begin earlier or later. Who should attend FLC?

This conference is for all women interested in attending: current and rising sisterhood leaders, individual WRJ members, WRJ Board members, WRJ Chai Society members, WRJ Board alumnae, and any woman age 18 and older who is interested in sharing this incredible experience (whether a member of WRJ or not)!

Why should I (and/or someone else from my sisterhood) attend FLC?

As our testimonials confirm, there is something extraordinarily valuable to be gained from meeting face to face with many other like-minded Reform Jewish women and from learning first-hand the tools needed to improve your leadership skills and benefit your sisterhood and community. Running the gamut from the “nuts and bolts” tools that new or incoming leaders need, all the way up to advanced skills for experienced and seasoned leaders, the conference has something to offer a wide variety of WRJ women. And for those who are interested in personal growth and advanced Jewish topics (rather than skills training), FLC features many such sessions as well. The large numbers of returning attendees attests to the power of this experience. It is not to be missed!

Hotel & Travel

When should I arrive for FLC? When does it end?

The conference runs from Thursday, March 1 through Sunday, March 4, 2018. Please complete your online registration before booking your hotel and flight/travel, so that you will know exactly when to arrive and depart, based on the programs for which you register. For general FLC attendance, you should plan to arrive at the hotel no later than 4:00 p.m. on Thursday to check-in and pick up registration materials; this means you should book a flight that lands at Nashville International Airport earlier than 3:15 p.m. on Thursday, and stay through the conference’s end on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. by booking a flight that departs after 2:00 p.m. However, there are pre-conference options, including the WRJ Board of Directors Meeting (Tuesday night – Thursday morning) and the WRJ Fundraising Event (Thursday midday; bus departs hotel at 11:45 a.m.) that require an earlier arrival, so please book your travel accordingly for your attendance needs so as not to miss this special opportunity!

Where is the 2018 FLC? Where do I stay? How do I get there?

The entire conference program, along with the WRJ hotel room block, will be at the Nashville Airport Marriott Hotel. Once you complete your online registration, you will receive the link to make a reservation at the Marriott in your confirmation email. All attendees are responsible for making their own reservations by February 5, 2018 to get WRJ’s discounted rate.

The hotel is a 5-10 minute drive from the Nashville International Airport (BNA). Nashville International Airport (BNA) is the closest airport, less than 10 minutes away. The hotel offers a complimentary shuttle between 4:30 a.m. – 11:45 p.m. The shuttle picks up at the airport at :15 and :45 past the hour, and departs the hotel lobby at :00 and :30 of each hour. At the airport, follow the signs downstairs and outside to Ground Transportation, then cross the crosswalk and turn left for the “Hotel Shuttles” sign, under which the shuttle will pick-up. Note that the shuttle fits about 15 passengers at once; during busy times, you may have to wait.
If you require a taxi/Uber/Lyft, the approximate cost is $10-20 each way. Visit the hotel website for more information.

For those driving, complimentary on-site parking is available at the hotel.

Can I share a hotel room? How do I find a roommate?

Rooms at the Marriott contain 1 king or 2 queen beds, and can certainly be shared between two or more women. Attendees are responsible for making their own hotel reservations, including finding their own roommate. If you would like to share a room but do not have a roommate, use the WRJ FLC 2018 Attendees’ Yammer group (to which you’ll be added once you complete your registration) and post that you’re looking for a roommate and for which night(s) – use the Topic Tags “RoommateSearch” and “Hotel.” Women have good success rates in matching up this way!

Registration & Pricing

How much does it cost to attend FLC? What does my registration include?

The fee “Early Bird” registration fee is $495 on or before January 10, 2018. From January 11 – February 10, 2018, the fee for regular registration is $550.

Until February 10, 2018, the registration fee for any woman ages 18-36 is $250 (please email the WRJ Registrar to find out about this discount).

All registration fees are in USD and non-U.S. attendees must pay in USD or the equivalent amount in their local currency.

Your registration fee includes:

·         All meals during the conference, including Thursday dinner; Friday breakfast, lunch, and dinner; Saturday breakfast, lunch, and dinner; and Sunday breakfast

·         All programming, including workshops, speakers, networking, worship, and music

·         Workshop handouts and conference materials

·         Pre- and post-FLC access to WRJ’s private FLC 2018 online communication & resource group on Yammer, which also grants access to other “open” WRJ Yammer groups

The WRJ Fundraising Event on Thursday, March 1 (before FLC begins) requires pre-registration and has an additional cost: Supporter $180, or VIP $220 (includes priority seating, museum audio guide & more!). 50% of the ticket price goes to supporting WRJ's important work.

The WRJ Choir will also have an additional $18 fee and requires pre-registration; more information is available below.

Not included in your FLC registration are the following expenses:

  • Hotel reservation
  • Flight and other travel arrangements (including ground transportation)
  • Meals not listed above (such as Thursday and Sunday lunches)
  • WRJ Choir registration
  • Optional pre-conference Fundraising Event
  • Purchase of WRJ products
  • Donations to WRJ
  • Any other expenses unless otherwise noted

Does WRJ offer any financial assistance to attend FLC?
WRJ offers a limited number of grants to eligible sisterhoods to cover the cost of registration to attend FLC. Visit the Grants page to find out if your sisterhood is eligible and to learn more. 

How can I register for FLC? How do I pay the fee?

FLC 2018 registration is only available online. Registration will open in October 2017 and close in mid-February 2018. All registrations must be completed on an individual basis (no group registrations) on our secure online website and paid for in full by credit card (Visa, MasterCard, or American Express) when submitting your registration. Once registration is complete, you will receive a confirmation email, which contains the link to make a reservation at the hotel at the group rate.

If your sisterhood is covering your registration fee, pleasemake the appropriate arrangements to enable you to pay at the time you register.

If you need to pay by check, you must still complete the online registration (up until the payment page) and then mail a check to WRJ for the full amount you owe. Once WRJ receives and processes your check, you will receive a confirmation email. All check payments must be postmarked no later than February 15, 2018. Please contact wrjregistrar@wrj.org for instructions on mailing a check payment.

If you are a recipient of a North American Sisterhood Grant, you must still pay the registration fee at the time you register. WRJ will reimburse your sisterhood by check after FLC is concluded.

All registration fees must be paid, in full, before FLC; partial payments cannot be accepted.

What happens if I need to change or cancel my registration and get a refund?
If you register for the WRJ FLC 2018 and are not able to attend, you must email the WRJ Registrar with your cancellation request and include the reason for the cancellation to receive a partial or full refund. Refunds will be applied as follows:

  • On or before February 1, 2018: A full refund less a $50 administrative fee
  • February 2-19, 2018: A full refund less a $50 administrative fee and less any costs WRJ has incurred for reserved meals and/or other expenses
  • On or after February 20, 2018:  No refund except in the event of a documented illness, death in the family, or inclement weather that makes travel to the conference impossible, for which WRJ will offer to refund 50% of the registration fee less a $50 administrative

Fundraising Event refund requests:

  • On or before February 14, 2018: 50% refund
  • On or after February 15, 2018: No refund provided

Please allow up to six weeks after the conclusion of the event for your refund to be processed. We are not able to offer a credit balance toward future WRJ events.

Can I attend part of FLC and pay a lower fee?
WRJ does not offer partial attendance packages or prorated registration rates for FLC, except in the case of Shabbat Guests (family and friends of Full FLC registrants, who are not themselves members of WRJ). See below for more information on Shabbat Guests.

Can I bring a guest with me to FLC, or to part of FLC?
Full FLC registrants may register one or more guests (family or friends) to join the Shabbat, non-workshop portions of FLC. The “Shabbat Guest” option is intended for non-WRJ members who want to join their WRJ companion for Shabbat – it is not for WRJ attendees who are only able to attend the Shabbat portion of FLC. This package costs $300 per person and includes: Friday night dinner and services, Saturday morning breakfast and Torah Study, Saturday morning services, Saturday afternoon lunch, Saturday Havdalah service, and Saturday night “Purimpalooza” dinner. Shabbat Guests will be able to add the Thursday afternoon Fundraising Event and/or Friday afternoon YES Fund lunch within their registration. There will not be any separate/additional programming for guests. If you are interested in registering a Shabbat Guest to come with you, please email wrjregistrar@wrj.org to receive the Shabbat Guest link. Each guest must complete a separate registration and payment.

Program & Schedule

What is the schedule for the weekend? What types of workshops are being offered?

Do I have to pre-register for individual workshops? 
All workshops during FLC (excluding pre-FLC special programs) do not require advance registration. An attendee may choose to attend any workshop on-site as long as space remains in the room (on a first come, first served basis).

Are there any special add-on programs available?
FLC 2018 features a pre-conference Fundraising Event at the world-famous Country Music Hall of Fame. More details are available here. This special event, which will give you a quintessnetial Music City experience while supporting WRJ's important work, can be added within your FLC registration.

What is the WRJ Choir?
The WRJ Choir provides an opportunity for women to share their love of music and singing with FLC attendees by rehearsing before, and performing during, FLC worship services. Led by musician Stacy Beyer, the choir will have at least three mandatory rehearsals during FLC: Thursday afternoon during Workshop Block A, Friday afternoon during Workshop Block B, and Saturday morning during Torah Study breakfasts. It’s possible there may also be a rehearsal early Friday morning (before programming begins) - the exact schedule is TBD. Materials will be sent in advance for preparation, and the on-site rehearsals are required.
There is an $18 fee to cover costs. No prior musical experience is necessary. Choir sign-up closes on January 17th

How much time will I spend in religious services? 
Worship is a very significant part of FLC. We are together for all of Shabbat and WRJ holds joyous Friday night, Saturday morning, and Saturday evening Havdalah services. All services and their music are arranged especially for WRJ FLC 2018 – you won’t want to miss the meaningful magic of hundreds of women lending their voices to pray as one!

Governance & Resolutions

How do resolutions or constitutional amendments get proposed at FLC?

Resolutions adopted by the Legislative Body serve as policy guidelines for programming, advocacy, and action by local sisterhoods and WRJ Districts. Sisterhood presidents will receive a copy of the drafted, proposed Resolutions that will be voted on during the WRJ plenary sessions, no later than 60 days before FLC. 

Proposed amendments to the constitution are considered or offered by to the Committee on Constitutional Amendments and Revisions. As stated in Article 20 of the WRJ Constitution: “All proposed amendments agreed to by the Committee on Constitutional Amendments and Revisions, along with explanatory material, shall be submitted to the WRJ Board of Directors for approval. The agreed upon amendments to the constitution shall be sent to all affiliated sisterhoods and women’s groups and district presidents no less than thirty days prior to the WRJ Legislative Body meeting. If adopted by a two thirds vote of the WRJ Legislative Body delegates, amendments shall become part of the constitution.”

Who is eligible to vote on resolutions and constitutional amendments at the WRJ FLC?

Sisterhood presidents will be asked to identify voting delegates before FLC. A list of registrants from every sisterhood will be sent to the respective president of the sisterhood about a month prior to FLC so the president can designate voting delegates and alternates from the sisterhood’s WRJ registrants. Individual members will be notified regarding eligibility to serve as a delegate. Only appointed delegates, in possession of voting cards, will be eligible to vote in the WRJ legislative session. Voting will only take place in person during the WRJ legislative session; WRJ does not offer proxy voting.

How will I know how many votes my sisterhood is entitled to?

Voting delegates are determined according to Article 5 of the WRJ Constitution: “Each sisterhood/women’s group shall have delegates and alternates to the WRJ Legislative Body in the following proportion to membership:

1-99 members of the sisterhood: 5 voting delegates
100-149 members: 6 voting delegates
150-199 members: 7 voting delegates
200-299 members: 8 voting delegates
300-399 members: 9 voting delegates
400-599 members: 10 voting delegates
600-799 members: 11 voting delegates
800 members and over: 12 voting delegates plus 1 additional delegate for every 200 additional members.

Alternates in equal number to delegates may be appointed. There is no limit on the number of official visitors without power of voice or vote at a meeting of the WRJ Legislative Body."


I have dietary restrictions. Will I be able to eat the food at FLC?
All food served at FLC is kosher-style, but not certified kosher (i.e., no pork or shellfish is served, and no meat and dairy products will be mixed). There is always a vegetarian option available which includes protein, and special accommodations can be made for lactose intolerant and nut-free diets. For those with other food allergies, we will do our best to accommodate your needs.

Is the FLC 2018 venue handicapped accessible?

The Nashville Airport Marriott hotel is entirely wheelchair-accessible, with ramps and automatic doors at the front lobby. All meeting spaces are on the first floor. Elevators bring guests to their room floors, where there are a number of mobility-accessible rooms with roll-in showers. There is handicapped parking available near all entrances.

Please note that special accommodations regarding your hotel stay must be made directly with the hotel. Please call the hotel’s group rooms coordinator for WRJ, Judy Gero, at 615-872-2834 if you need to make an accessible reservation.

We strive to make FLC accessible and meaningful to all those who wish to participate. If you require special accommodations, please enter them into your online registration and also contact Amanda Feldman at afeldman@wrj.org or 212-650-4054 by February 1, 2018 so that we can work with you to support your attendance throughout the conference.

Is there WiFi at the hotel?

Attendees should sign up for the free Marriott Rewards program to receive complimentary WiFi in their hotel room. WRJ will provide WiFi access in the meeting space during FLC.

What is the dress code? What should I bring with me?
Dress is generally “business casual.” On Shabbat, attendees typically wear nicer dresses, skirts, slacks, and tops (there will be a brief break on Friday afternoon to change). A comfortable pair of shoes for walking and a light sweater, scarf or jacket for layering (as room temperatures can vary) are also important. And this year, since we’ll be celebrating Purim together, bring something you can use for a Saturday night costume! Finally, don’t forget to bring with you any WRJ/District pins and tallitot/kippot, as is your custom. Be sure to leave a little free space in your luggage for anything you may purchase at the WRJ Boutique.
