Oldest Jewish Women's Religious Organization Broadens its Reach in Landmark Membership Decision

New York, NY, November 5, 2015 — Women of Reform Judaism (WRJ) has voted to open its membership beyond sisterhoods based in Reform congregations to include any individual woman around the world who identifies with and supports its objectives, which include empowering women and advocating for progressive Jewish values.

The vote on this constitutional revision occurred on Thursday, November 5, 2015 during WRJ’s 50th Assembly in Orlando, FL after months of preparation, including a unanimous vote by the WRJ Board of Directors in June.

“We are thrilled to open our doors even further to include Reform women from around the world who share our values, yet, due to geographic limitations, have previously been unable to join our organization,” said WRJ President Blair C. Marks. “This change to our Constitution ensures that all women who want to create caring communities, nurture congregations, cultivate their own personal and spiritual growth, and promote progressive Jewish values may do so along with tens of thousands of other like-minded women, truly embodying our motto: ‘stronger together’.”

This vote allows any woman who is not a member of an affiliated sisterhood or congregation to join the organization. Previously, WRJ membership was only available to affiliated sisterhoods.

Individual members will be able to attend WRJ and WRJ District events, network with other women in the organization via online platforms, participate in special online interest groups and educational programs, and keep updated on WRJ news and resources.

Women of Reform Judaism (WRJ) strengthens the voice of women worldwide and empowers them to create caring communities, nurture congregations, cultivate personal and spiritual growth, and advocate for and promote progressive Jewish values.
