The key to membership is marketing. . .

The way to attract new members often depends on how you market your sisterhood. It is critical that you market Sisterhood in your temple. Let everyone know how fabulous your sisterhood is! Do they know all the great things you do? How you market your sisterhood is very important. Here are some ways – old and new – for spreading the word about your sisterhood in your synagogue and beyond.

Webpage

If your temple has a website, we recommend that you set up and maintain an up-to-date sisterhood webpage with all your information including a full calendar of events. And please include a link to the Northeast District's homepage.

Facebook

Consider setting up a Facebook page. It's an easy way to communicate with your members and a great way to send them invitations to events. Many younger women do much of their communicating through email and Facebook. If we want to attract them, we need to consider different types of communications. And don't forget to like our Facebook page.

Traditional Media

Even in our age of social media, continue to use the personal touch! Make phone calls, especially to new members. Traditional mail (USPS) should still be used, especially to send personal cards or notes to people. And remember to use USPS to communicate with sisterhood members who are not connected online; you want to make sure that you reach everyone in your sisterhood community.

Elevator Speech

A great way to market sisterhood and WRJ is through an "elevator speech" – a short sales pitch that takes 30-60 seconds and includes what sisterhood or WRJ does, what it means to you, and why it might be of interest to the person you are speaking to. Click here to see an outline written by WRJ board member Karen Sim on how to prepare elevator speeches for a variety of situations.

Report Cards

Consider making a "report card" that highlights your successes. You can put it in your temple bulletin, send it along with your membership dues, or print it onto poster size and put it in your temple lobby. Everyone can see it when they walk into the building. It's especially helpful at the beginning of the year when you are starting your membership drive and new women are walking into the building. It's great to have at your membership event, or at your temple's welcome event at the beginning of the year.;

As an example, here's a report card that was developed by the North Shore Synagogue of Syosset, NY. It appeared in the bulletin and with dues notices and was used to create a beautiful eye-catching report card poster that was displayed in the lobby.
